As parents and caregivers approach the summer break from school, many are thinking about changing childcare, trips to the pool, how to keep children engaged in activities at home, the abrupt changes to everyone's schedule - and how to juggle it all. What they might not be focusing on is how much educational ground their children could lose during the three-month break from school, particularly when it comes to reading. The good news is that reading books and regular participation in educational activities during the summer helps children beat this learning loss. That's why the Virginia Beach Public Library offers an annual Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging children to read books and participate in enrichment activities over the Summer.
